How to Make Your Home Hygge During the Winter Months

After Christmas things can feel a little bleak and boring. Long after the Christmas tree is gone I like to keep things super cozy, relaxed, and welcoming. I want my home to exude warmth so I wanted to share a few tips that might help give your home that hygge vibe.

Hygge is defined as "a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture)."

Candles. First of all, I love to incorporate a lot of candles in my home. They are so warm and inviting and give off the most pleasing of scents. My favorites are Homesick, Anthropologie, and even various kinds I find at TJ Maxx. Candles instantly up the cozy feel of your home and make you want to sit back, relax, and have meaningful conversations.

Layers. Throw blankets. Throw pillows. Faux fur. Slip covered sofas. Bring on all the layers and textures! Throw blankets are lovely draped across a couch, over a bed, or hung on a ladder. Throw pillows can also be tossed anywhere and everywhere. I'm loving the look of them styled on the floor too. Don't even get me started on fur! It's so luxurious and soft and I love love love it in a space!

Books. Whenever I see a well loved library or books scattered throughout a house it brings a whole new level of soul and depth to a space. Books are so easy to incorporate and make your home that more interesting. Check used book stores and thrift stores to often score some unique ones for cheap!

Textures. Wood. Ceramics. Dried flowers, Velvet. Linen. All of these combined together in a space create such a pleasant atmosphere. Combining textures is one of my favorite things to do.

Plants. Often after Christmas I love to go to the nursery and choose some new plants to brighten the space. I am usually really missing our large evergreen so I like to discover new plant babies to bring home and place on my shelves. They are a quick and relatively cheap way to freshen up your space.

Spaces. Create pockets of hygge in corners of your home. I like to create a spa like atmosphere in my bathroom by stocking it with thick towels, bath salts, candles, and specialty soaps. Put together a basket of hot cocoa and a variety of coffees and teas by the tea pot or coffee maker in the kitchen. Have a window bench? Layer it with throws, pillows, and a stack of books.

Puzzles & Games. Wintertime is the perfect time to bring out the slowness of life. Grab those games, puzzles, and adult coloring books that are collecting dust in your closet and sit down and spend an afternoon connecting with a friend, spouse, or enjoy some alone time disconnecting from the media world. They can often look so lovely stacked by a fireplace in the den too.

I hope I was able to inspire you to slow down, soak up all the wintry cozy vibes of the season, and disconnect from the outside world for awhile. Have a lovely weekend, friends.  ~ Hannah
